| "Northern Uganda is a terrifying
place. From full hospital wards and closed schools, to victims
of rape and packed orphanages, you
can see the
effects of guns wherever you look. The
irony is that Uganda doesn't make these weapons, or the bullets
that are used to destroy so many Ugandan
lives. They flood in as a result of an arms trade which
is out of control.
While I was talking to a group of
cattle herders who had recently been raided, I picked up
a bullet lying on the ground. To my horror,
I found out later that it was a British
bullet. I had never expected to see such a direct link
between their suffering and our arms industry,
but there it was, staring me in the face.
The courage of the people working to stop the slaughter
was inspiring. But
the continuing arms trade makes it almost impossible.
The people I met weren't asking the
international community for chairty, they just wanted us
to stop screwing up their lives.
Our government can take a lead and clean up the arms trade.
